There is always a lot of pressure at the beginning of a new year to set goals and achieve everything you have ever wanted to. For some this is daunting and overwhelming, leading to inaction. Today I wanted to share some top tips to help you improve your fitness and well being in 2023.

> What are the Foundations of Fitness

There are different aspects of fitness and wellbeing which make up 'total fitness'. Some of the most important components are:

  • Physical fitness - being strong, being mobile, having the stamina to do all you want

  • Mental fitness - being able to cope with the stresses of life, having good mental health

  • Health fitness - being disease free and having good immunity

  • Social fitness - having a strong network of friend and supportive people

  • Environmental fitness - having the security of a roof over your head, food and clothes but also the right people around you, a lifestyle which doesn't drain you and leave you on empty.

> Try to set a variety of goals

Fat or Weight loss are the most common goals, however it is wise to have a variety of goals:

  • Performance goal - this could be to improve strength, to be able to complete a charity fun run in a certain time, to be able to complete a Zumba class and not feel dead at the end 🤣!

  • Aesthetic goal - this is the more common fat loss goal, or to get to a dress size or waist measurement. My top tip is not to rely on the scales - take progress pictures and measure with a tape measure.

  • Life goals - have you always wanted to to learn something, change career or visit somewhere?

What ever your goal, make sure you know WHY you want to achieve it.

> Don’t do it alone

We all need support and accountability, so make sure you include this when planning your fitness and wellbeing goals. It could be telling someone you trust what your goals are, or it could be having a goal buddy - someone who is wanting the same goal as you. This way you have someone to encourage you to go out for that walk or jog when it's raining!

> Set goals or a focus

Goal give us direction and something to work towards. As humans, we need purpose. Goals give you just that. Don't forget to follow the SMART acronym.

  • Specific - if it’s specific, there is no doubt when you have achieved it

  • Measurable - make sure you track progress, if things aren’t going to plan, revisit your plan

  • Achievable - make sure it doesn’t overwhelm you into inaction.

  • Realistic - look at your resources i.e. time available, financial, lifestyle

  • Timebound - this is a deadline to achieve your goals by

> Finally, set ACTIONS

Once you know where you want to go, set out the actions you need to take to get there. Break it down into small, manageable steps which move you forwards.

If you don't know where you are going but, for example, know that you want to get more active, just set one single action to get you started. So you could set the action of walking for 5minutes daily, or to join a Fitness with Matt class. Getting started and taking action are the most important steps.

The Final 'T'

Life is short, life is precious, make sure you are taking care of your body and wellbeing so you can enjoy every moment. Don't worry about creating the best ever action plan, focus on the actions which will get you there.
